©今日マチ子（秋田書店）／NHK・NEP NHK has announced a fresh key visual along with an August 25, 2025, premier broadcast date for the World War II drama anime Cocoon. The series will kick off on NHK General, following an early airing in Japan on March 30, 2025.
Ina Yukimitsu will be directing the anime adaptation, with Kensuke Ushio (The Colors Within, DAN DA DAN) providing the music. Sasayuri is responsible for the animation production.The main voice cast includes Hikari Mitsushima as Mayu and Marika Ito as San.
Machiko Kyo’s Cocoon manga ran in Akita Shoten’s Elegance Eve from March 26, 2009, to May 27, 2010. The series was compiled into a single volume and published in Japan in August 2010, later reissued as a single tankobon volume in April 2015, which features a side story.
NHK mentioned upon the anime’s announcement in June 2023 that it aims to be a thought-provoking piece regarding war, highlighting that 2025 will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II.
Another objective of the production is to impart animation skills and techniques. The animation production company, Sasayuri, began as a café established by the anime’s animation producer Hitomi Tateno (known for The Wind Rises and Ponyo in-between animation inspector) in 2014. Sasayuri was officially founded in 2017 and includes animation training among its goals.
Sasayuri Cafe has been closed indefinitely since late 2020, having hosted numerous art exhibitions, such as the Jin-Roh Hiroyuki Okiura Exhibition, the Cyberconnect2 Art Works Exhibition, and Anime Style 20 Anniversary Exhibition Part 2 #Yoh Yoshinari Doodles.
