© 2025 スタジオ地図 Mamoru Hosoda‘s latest film, Scarlet, is now set to have its general North American release in “early 2026” instead of December 12.
The press release detailing the new release date (noted by redditor Ninjaboi333) also indicated that Sony Pictures Classics, a branch of Sony Pictures Entertainment focusing on independent films, will oversee Scarlet‘s release in the area.
The Studio CHIZU-produced anime will still be shown at this year’s New York Film Festival, which is scheduled from September 26 to October 13, allowing it to qualify for the Oscars.
Scarlet features Hosoda (Belle, Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) undertaking a fantasy adventure and an animation style distinct from his previous works (“neither 2D nor a Hollywood-style CG animation” is what Hosoda was reported to have mentioned during the film’s announcement event). Here is how the press release outlines the storyline:
From visionary Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (MIRAI) comes a powerful, time-bending animated adventure about SCARLET, a medieval-era, sword fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in the Otherworld that exists somewhere between life and death, she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?
