GKIDS announced at its industry panel at Anime NYC that it will be releasing a new 4K restoration of Satoshi Kon’s psychological thriller anime film Perfect Blue to U.S. cinemas starting October 3, 2025. The film’s screenplay was penned by Sadayuki Murai (Millennium Actress, Kaina of the Great Snow Sea), and the animation production company was Madhouse.

Perfect Blue initially debuted at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival in 1997, followed by its premiere in Japan on February 29, 1998. GKIDS screened the film in both English subbed and dubbed formats in September 2018 and collaborated with Shout! Factory to launch a new Blu-ray disc in North America in March 2019. The anime film draws inspiration from Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s 1991 novel, Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, which has been licensed for English release by Seven Seas Entertainment.

GKIDS summarizes the primary synopsis of Perfect Blue as:
“Who are…you?”
Mima Kirigoe, a former pop idol, makes a daring transition into acting, assuming a role in a drama that features a disturbing assault scene, alongside releasing a provocative nude photo book. Her dramatic transformation captures public interest, but it also induces anxiety among her fans, her manager, and even herself as she grapples with the swift shift from her days as a pop idol. As a stalker begins to follow her, a screenwriter and a photographer are killed one after the other. “Did I kill them?” Mima starts to question if a split personality is gradually assuming control, much like the character she portrays in the drama. Then “the other Mima,” the pop idol who was meant to have “graduated,” confronts her…
