The internationally renowned anime franchise Dragon Ball continues to enhance its legacy, with significant updates from Toei Animation emerging from the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event in Japan this weekend (db-genkidamatsuir.com). This gathering marked the celebration of the show’s monumental 40th anniversary this year.
Drawing inspiration from the original manga by Akira Toriyama, the recently announced anime story arc Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is officially in production. This exciting project was unveiled during the opening session, which featured Masako Nozawa (the voice of Son Goku) and series executive producer Akio Iyoku on stage.
The Galactic Patrol storyline will extend the Universe Survival arc of the anime Dragon Ball Super, which originally aired from 2015 to 2018. It is also represented in the Dragon Ball manga as the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc.” The core protagonists, Son Goku and Vegeta, collaborate with the Galactic Patrol, the galaxy’s peacekeepers, to engage in a grand battle against the new adversary, “Planet-Eater” Moro!

The teaser visual for this title was unveiled globally for the first time during the “Exclusive Announcements GENKIDASTAGE Part 1.” Accompanying the logo for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, Goku and Vegeta are depicted wearing uniforms and battle armor adorned with the Galactic Patrol insignia on their chests. Their serious expressions, paired with a large Galactic Patrol emblem in the background, offer an exhilarating first glimpse of the two warriors standing united.

At Part 1 of the event, it was revealed that the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Special Video was launched simultaneously worldwide, bringing Toriyama’s illustrations to life through a vibrant new animation that skillfully integrates a variety of visual techniques, tailored to embody the distinctive qualities of his works.
The video is produced by Toei Animation and directed by Naoki Miyahara, known for his role as general animation director in titles such as Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, and as sequence director for The First Slam Dunk and Director for Pretty Cure! The Movie. The animation prioritizes an authentic depiction of the textures and colors found in Toriyama’s illustrations, culminating in dynamic visuals that vividly showcase Son Goku’s evolution and adventures.
The score for the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Special Video was composed by the internationally-renowned film composer Hans Zimmer, celebrated for his iconic works like Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lion King, and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including Academy Awards.

Building on the excitement from Part 2 of the panel, a supercharged version of the Dragon Ball Super series is under development, titled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus. Slated for release in Fall 2026, attendees of Genkidamatsuri were the first to witness the brand-new launch trailer and debut key visuals for the project. This announcement was made alongside Nozawa, Iyoku, and Koichi Yamadera (voice of Beerus, the God of Destruction) who shared their enthusiasm with fans.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is the enhanced edition of Dragon Ball Super, for which Toriyama crafted the original work, narrative, and character design. The project boasts substantial new material, revisions to existing content, a complete re-rendering of all footage, freshly recorded dubbing with new score and sound effects, and a total reconstruction of the storyline. This edition employs state-of-the-art visuals to amplify the power and immersion throughout each scene — especially during the battles — accurately portraying Toriyama’s original visions and worldbuilding at the highest quality feasible for broadcast.
The captivating launch trailer begins with the God of Destruction Beerus in a prolonged, deep slumber. As Earth is threatened by Beerus, the strongest entity in the universe, Goku and his friends must rise to protect it. What will the outcome be in this monumental confrontation between Super Saiyan God Goku and Beerus? The trailer features not only Beerus and Goku but also Vegeta, Whis, and the rest of Goku’s allies. The launch visual illustrates Beerus and Goku, with both space and Earth serving as the backdrop.
