The staff credits of the OLM production feature:

Scum of the Brave is adapted from the light novel authored by Rocket Syokai, which was published under the KADOKAWA Books label in December 2016. The narrative is set in a universe where yakuza can ascend to become demon kings, and the act of eliminating them has been legalized through the creation of heroes. Yashiro, a lackluster hero, takes on the role of a mentor to several high school girls who wish to become heroes.
The initial light novel was illustrated by Yuya Kusaka. A revamped version featuring revisions and illustrations from toi8 was announced alongside the anime this year.

Scum of the Brave originally started as a Kakuyomu web novel. The light novel has a manga adaptation illustrated by Nakashima 723.
