Crunchyroll revealed today that it has secured the worldwide theatrical rights (excluding Asia) to the heartfelt and fantastical film Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A lonely dragon wants to be loved, inspired by the manga by Coolkyousinnjya from Kyoto Animation. The film will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles across North America.
The film continues the narrative that devotees have cherished in the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime series, which focuses on Miss Kobayashi — an ordinary office worker whose monotonous, solitary existence takes a turn when she rescues a female dragon in peril. The dragon, Tohru, possesses the power to magically convert into an adorable human girl (with horns and a long tail!), eager to express her gratitude, regardless of Miss Kobayashi’s feelings.
Picking up immediately where Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 concluded, the new film presents Dragon child Kanna Kamui grappling with a significant choice, torn between her biological dragon family and her recently formed human family.
Synopsis: Miss Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and Iruru’s serene lives are disrupted when Kanna’s father, Kamun Kamui, the leader of the Chaos Forces, appears and mandates her return to the Dragon World to rectify a previous error. With tensions escalating between Chaos and Harmony, Kanna must discover a means to bridge the two realms while being torn between her allegiance to her friends and her father’s expectations. Miss Kobayashi, however, is determined not to let her go and strives to repair the connection between Kanna and Kamui. As dragons collide, Iruru reveals a clandestine force instigating the conflict. Will they manage to avert the war before it engulfs both worlds?
The upcoming Dragon Maid film is helmed by Kyoto Animation veteran and series director Tatsuya Ishihara, whose directorial portfolio also encompasses The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and the Sound! Euphonium series, alongside three films.
