Crunchyroll Streams Shabake TV Anime in October 2025

Crunchyroll has announced that it has secured the licensing for the forthcoming historical fantasy TV anime series Shabake, which will be included in its Fall 2025 simulcast lineup. The weekly streaming of the series will kick off on the same day as the Japanese premiere, October 3, 2025.

The service will offer the series in various regions, including North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian subcontinent.

The series is directed by Takahiro Okawa (assistant director of Mononogatari), with Toko Machida (The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord’s Army was a Human) as the series screenwriter, and Akari Minagawa (Attack on Titan Final Season The Final Chapters co-animation director) taking on the character design. Animation production is being handled by BN Pictures.

The anime draws inspiration from the novel series created by Megumi Hatakenaka, which made its debut with Shinchosha on December 1, 2001, and has seen the release of 23 volumes as of July 2024. The book series won the Excellence Award at the 13th Nihon Fantasy Novel Taishou in 2001.
The novels also led to a manga adaptation by Mimori, published in Monthly Comic Bunch magazine from 2017 to 2023, with a total of four tankobon volumes released. Additionally, an ONA short from Shuka was released in July 2021 as part of the 20th anniversary of the novel series.

Accompanied by his spirit companions— a Hakutaku and an Inugami —who serve to protect him, Ichitaro’s life takes a turn when he witnesses a murder one night. This triggers a series of strange murder cases all over Edo, and with the assistance of the spirits, Ichitaro embarks on a quest to uncover the culprit!
