An official press release for the series presents the main concept of The Final Test as:
“The Final Test” expands on the increasing connection between anime fandom and language learning. The series provides a fresh backstory for Duo and his friends: prior to becoming streak guardians, they were just average individuals. After being recruited by Duo to assist learners in staying motivated, the team faces various challenges to maintain their streak – and support one another.

The launch of the animated miniseries coincides with the launch of Duolingo’s revamped Japanese courses, now accessible to learners in all languages. Duolingo app integrations also feature custom lesson-complete animations and widget illustrations themed around The Final Test.
