Fullmetal Alchemist was first serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine from 2001 to 2010. WEBTOON presents the storyline as:
After losing their mother to an illness at a young age, two gifted alchemists, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt the forbidden act of human transmutation to resurrect her. However, they soon discover that there is a significant cost for breaking the ultimate rule of alchemy. Edward loses his left leg when the transmutation goes wrong, and his only surviving family, Alphonse, is taken from him. In a desperate attempt to reclaim his beloved brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind Alphonse’s soul into a suit of armor. The siblings must now embark on a quest to regain all that they have lost.
The manga inspired two Bones-produced anime adaptations — the first from 2003 to 2004, directed by Seiji Mizushima, and the second from 2009 to 2010, directed by Yasuhiro Irie. Additionally, there are two anime films: 2005’s Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa and 2011’s Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos.
In addition to the anime, the manga has inspired video games, live-action films, and a stage adaptation.
