©2025 Beijing HMCH Anime Co.,Ltd GKIDS revealed last week that it has secured the North American theatrical and home entertainment rights to The Legend of Hei 2. The donghua animated film will debut in North American theaters on September 5, 2025. It was originally released in China on July 18, 2025.Â
GKIDS will also distribute the Chinese animated film in Southeast Asia on August 28, 2025, and in Japan on November 7, 2025. It will screen in theaters in Hong Kong, Macau, and South Korea on later dates.Â
GKIDS outlines the main story of The Legend of Hei 2 as follows:Â
When an attack disrupts the delicate peace between the spirit world and humanity, Hei joins forces with Luye, the last disciple of his Shifu Wuxian, to uncover a conspiracy that endangers both worlds – and the relationship they’ve pledged to safeguard.

Shout! Studios released The Legend of Hei donghua film in 2021 as a Blu-ray/DVD combo set in the U.S. and Canada, which included an English dub. It summarized the first film as follows: When cat spirit Luo Xiaohei’s home is destroyed by humans, he must seek a new one. He encounters a group of other spirit creatures who take him in with aspirations of reclaiming the land they claim is rightfully theirs. However, they meet a human named Wuxian who separates Luo Xiaohei from the other spirits, leading the two on a journey, during which the cat spirit learns to harness his abilities and develops his own perspective on whether he should align with the spirits or the humans.
