Crunchyroll and Aniplex of America also announced earlier this week that they will begin streaming the 2019 anime film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl with both English subtitles and an English dub. The film is now available for streaming on the platform, starting this Thursday.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus is the latest installment in the Rascal Does Not Dream anime series, which is adapted from the supernatural teen/young adult drama light novel series penned by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Keji Mizoguchi. The new series signifies the commencement of the adaptation of the story’s “University Arc.”
The Rascal Does Not Dream anime debuted in 2018 with the Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai TV series. It was succeeded by three films: 2019’s Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl and 2023’s Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid.
The light novel series, published under ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint, was initially released on April 10, 2014, and concluded on October 10, 2024. A short story collection was also published in July 2025. The light novels have inspired several manga adaptations, based on the light novel volumes.
Yen Press releases the light novels and manga adaptations in English, describing the main synopsis as:
Bunny girls do not occupy libraries. This is simply common knowledge. However, that’s precisely where Sakuta discovers one in the wild. Even more perplexing is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, a girl one year senior to Sakuta, renowned at their school for her acting career even though she’s currently on break. To complicate matters, it appears that no one else in the library can see Mai at all, regardless of what she does or…wears. Seeking to uncover more about this enigma and possibly get a bit closer to this striking upperclassman in the process, Sakuta embarks on an investigation to find out why an unforgettable bunny girl continues to become entirely invisible.
