Four new cast members have been announced for the forthcoming Starwing Paradox prequel anime film AS ONE. The film is set to premiere in theaters across Japan on August 22, 2025.
They will join lead cast member Ruki Shiroiwa, who voices the main protagonist Yo in his voice acting debut.
Kobun Shizuno (known for his work on various Detective Conan films including The Crimson Love Letter and The Darkest Nightmare; co-director of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters) is directing the film. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Great Pretender, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water) serves as character designer, while Ippei Gyobu (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Seasons 1-2) takes on the role of mechanical designer. The writing team is composed of Kana Matsui, Shatner Nishida (Lupin III: Prison of the Past), and Masaya Honda (Soul Buster). Animation production is being managed by Honoo and Studio GOONEYS.
Sadamoto has previously contributed to character designs for the game, which was developed by BYKING and Square Enix. The anime segments in the game were originally created by Sunrise.
The Starwing Paradox sci-fi arcade game launched in November 2018 and remained accessible online until October 2021. Its primary gameplay mode featured 8v8 “high-speed” battles with the Air Real mecha. AZ-One refers to an Air Real pilot.
Comic Natalie describes AS ONE as a prequel that connects to the original game. The story revolves around an aspiring musician named Yo, who one day hears a cry for help in their mind and becomes engulfed in white light. A robot mechanic named Rako, attempting to prevent large-scale space debris from falling, falls into a coma and encounters Yo in their shared consciousness. This occurs during a ceasefire attempt between two nations from the planet Meguriboshi, who have been battling for control of energy resources.
