The 1993 Studio Ghibli-produced Ocean Waves anime special has unveiled a new poster visual along with a trailer in anticipation of its upcoming theatrical release in Japan.
The visual showcases scenes featuring the central characters Taku and Rikako.

It was announced in March that the anime will debut in theaters across the nation on July 4 JST and will run for three weeks.
Ocean Waves (Umi ga Kikoeru) is adapted from the 1993 Tokuma Shoten-published novel by the late Saeko Himuro, originally serialized in Animage. The story, mostly set in Kochi, revolves around Taku’s memories of Rikaku, a transfer student from Tokyo, during their high school years and the events that follow. The character designer for the anime, Katsuya Kondo (Kiki’s Delivery Service, From Up on Poppy Hill), also illustrated the book.
The anime was helmed by Tomomi Michizuki (Kimagure Orange Road: Ano Hi ni Kaeritai, Ranma 1/2 series director, Mysterious Disappearances) and scripted by Keiko Niwa (From Up on Poppy Hill and When Marnie Was There co-scriptwriter) under the pseudonym Kaori Nakamura. The score was composed by Shigeru Nagata.
The cast features Nobuo Tobita, Yoko Sakamoto, and Toshihiko Seki.
The Ocean Waves novel also inspired a live-action drama special and a 1999 sequel titled Ocean Waves II: Ai ga Aru kara (Umi ga Kikoeru II Ai ga Aru kara). Both volumes were re-released as shinsouban in 2022 and 2023.

In October 2024, a visual collection book named Umi ga Kikoeru The Visual Collection was published for the anime.
