The Rising of the Shield Hero is based on the MF Books light novel series by Yusagi Aneko and illustrated by Seira Minami, as described by One Peace Books:
Naofumi Iwatani, a socially awkward otaku who dedicates his life to gaming and manga, unexpectedly gets summoned to a different universe! He finds himself as one of four heroes wielding legendary weapons and entrusted with the mission to save the realm from an imminent catastrophe. As the Shield Hero, the weakest among the heroes, his journey is filled with challenges. Naofumi soon finds himself alone, broke, and betrayed. With no allies, and nowhere to flee, he is left bearing just his shield. Now, he must ascend to become the fabled Shield Hero and rescue the world!

The Rising of the Shield Hero originated as a web novel on Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2012. The light novel series began in August 2013 and contains 22 volumes as of June 2019. There are also manga adaptations and spin-off series.
