2. Historical Background of Korea
Before the Japanese occupation, Korea had a rich and varied history that dates back to prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence suggests that humans have inhabited the Korean peninsula for at least 40,000 years. During this time, various tribes developed and formed into kingdoms such as Gojoseon (고조선), Buyeo (부여), Goguryeo (고구려), Baekje (백제), Silla (신라) and Goryeo (고려).
3. Korean Dynasties Before Japan
The first known kingdom in Korea was Gojoseon, which was founded in 2333 BCE by Dangun Wanggeom, who is believed to be the ancestor of all Koreans. This kingdom lasted until 108 BCE when it was conquered by Han China during the Han–Gojoseon War. After Gojoseon’s fall, three powerful kingdoms emerged: Buyeo, Goguryeo and Baekje. These three kingdoms were known as “The Three Kingdoms” period and lasted from 57 BCE to 668 CE when Silla unified them under one rule.
4. Gojoseon and the Three Kingdoms Period
During this period, each kingdom had their own unique culture and traditions which still influence modern-day Korean culture today. For example, Buddhism was introduced during this period by scholars from India who traveled through China to reach the Korean peninsula. This religion became popular among all three kingdoms and helped shape their beliefs and values for centuries afterwards.

5. Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392)
After Silla unified The Three Kingdoms in 668 CE, they established a new dynasty called Goryeo which ruled until 1392 CE when it was replaced by Joseon Dynasty which lasted until 1910 CE when it was annexed by Japan during World War I due to their alliance with Britain against Russia in 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War.During this period, Goryeo adopted Confucianism as its official ideology while also preserving various aspects of Buddhism in society such as temples and monasteries across the country.
6. Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910)
The Joseon Dynasty is considered one of the longest lasting dynasties in world history with a total reign of 518 years from 1392 to 1910 CE when it fell under Japanese control during World War I due to their alliance with Britain against Russia in 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War.During this period, Confucianism became even more deeply rooted into society while other religions such as Buddhism were suppressed or discouraged due to their foreign origins or perceived lack of “Koreanness” compared with Confucianism which had been adopted since ancient times under The Three Kingdoms Period.
7. Japanese Colonial Rule (1910-1945)
Japan annexed Korea during World War I due to their alliance with Britain against Russia in 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War.During this period, Japan imposed harsh colonial policies on Koreans including forced labor camps for political prisoners; suppression of freedom of speech; heavy taxation; food rationing; forced assimilation; cultural suppression; land confiscation; military conscription; restrictions on travel outside Korea; compulsory education taught only in Japanese language; destruction or confiscation of traditional artifacts related to Korean culture; mass executions without trial etc., all aimed at erasing any trace or memory of previous Korean identities before Japanese occupation began.
8. Post-Colonial Korea
After World War II ended with Japan’s defeat in 1945,Korea regained its independence but was divided into two countries along ideological lines – North Korea governed by communists while South Korea remained democratic – following an agreement between United States & Soviet Union after WWII ended.Since then both countries have gone through tremendous economic growth & development despite numerous conflicts between them over the past decades.Today both countries are still technically at war but there has been progress towards reunification & peace talks are ongoing.

In conclusion,prior to being colonized by Japan,Koreans had a rich & varied history spanning thousands of years & multiple dynasties including Gojoseon,Buyeo,Goguryeo,Baekje,Silla & Goryeo among others.Despite having experienced harsh colonial rule under Japanese occupation for nearly half a century,Koreans have managed to rebuild & reclaim their identity while making great strides towards reunification & peace between North & South Korea.
