5. The Yamato Clan and the Imperial Family
The Yamato Clan was a powerful family that ruled over much of what is now known as central Honshu (the main island) from their capital at Nara starting around 250 AD until they were overthrown by a rival clan in 710 AD. During this time they established a centralized government system that was based on Chinese models but also incorporated elements from native Japanese beliefs such as Shintoism (the native religion). The Yamato Clan also established an imperial family line which still exists today; making them one of the oldest continuously ruling families in world history!
