The narrative incorporates elements of psychological drama, and author Wataru Murayama capitalizes on this chance to depict the challenges women must confront – something that Haruhiko was previously oblivious to.
Honestly, this one is a hit or miss. Not everyone’s preferred choice, as it contains some graphic scenes and triggering concepts scattered within. Nevertheless, it remains an intriguing read, especially due to Haruhiko’s character development. Side characters? Meh.
13. Tensei Pandemic:

Until now, we have encountered gender bender manga where the main character and sometimes a few others switch or alter their gender/sex. However, Tensei Pandemic distinguishes itself from them.
It delivers a consistent flow of boys and girls whose genders have been altered due to a virus that our protagonist inadvertently fell victim to.
The storyline revolves around Hinata Imamura, a feminine high school boy longing to be more masculine. But one day he wakes up to find he’s a girl? Nope! He transforms after consuming a mysterious drug from an even more mysterious individual in a shady lab!
This strange occurrence isn’t exclusive to him; it can spread like a pandemic when he kisses someone.
Thus unfolds a series of amusing and ecchi moments where Hinata receives kisses, or people “come into contact” with his lips in ludicrous ways. It’s advisable to keep logic aside and simply enjoy this one.
Additionally, Hinata must also manage the romantic interests that have emerged in his life.
Don’t approach this expecting significant character development or a dramatic journey through a gender identity crisis. That said, it doesn’t shy away from addressing some important aspects of gender change.
Overall, Tensei Pandemic is a delightful gender bender rom-com to have on your shelf!

Onimai falls under the category of gender bender manga that features Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. The manga is quite wholesome, to be honest. Even though the topic of gender change is addressed subtly, the emphasis is more on Mahiro’s socially withdrawn nature and how he gradually evolves by forging new relationships in life.
True, the concept of a 20-year-old being surrounded by high school girls does veer towards the level of absurdity seen in Mushoku Tensei, and yes – there is a generous dose of fanservice. Nevertheless, if you can overlook that, then we have a sweet and relaxing read at hand.

The plot follows Hazumu, a high school boy, who is rejected by his crush, Yasuna, early on. Heartbroken, he ascends a mountain where an alien spaceship crashes into him! Revived by the alien, Hitoshi, Hazumu returns to life, but with a shocking twist – he’s now a girl!
As Hazumu adjusts to her new life, things become increasingly complicated. Yasuna, who struggles to “see men” differently, suddenly confesses her affection for him (her). Meanwhile, Hazumu’s childhood friend, the tomboyish Tomari, also starts developing feelings for the main character.
Even amidst the developing love triangle, the story does an impressive job of addressing the gender shift, managing to remain fresh despite the inclusion of some clichéd elements. I personally liked Hazumu quite a bit, especially how she dealt with the transformation.
If you’re in search of a splendid gender bender manga that is sweet, melodramatic, and genuinely good – I recommend this one! I am intentionally not mentioning the aliens from the opening chapters!

Next up, we have another gender bender manga filled with a fair amount of ecchi elements. However, don’t let that deter you, because it does resolutely focus on the inner turmoil the protagonist experiences following a gender transformation.
The narrative centers around Mizuki Suzushiro, who, similar to Hinata from Tensei Pandemic, is a boy insecure about his feminine features. After making a wish in front of a special mirror, he is transformed into a girl by the trickster god Loki.
Mizuki must now navigate life as a girl, confronting the challenges and unforeseen outcomes that accompany this transformation.
A commendable aspect of Boku Girl is how it delves into Mizuki’s identity. He leans towards femininity but still yearns to be a boy to pursue his romantic interests.
This sets Mizuki apart from other protagonists you might have come across in gender bender titles, and it’s handled quite well by the author, though the oversexualization could have been moderated.
At times, I found the humor to be quite clichéd – the types frequently encountered within this genre. Nonetheless, the manga remains an enjoyable read and justly earns its place in my compilation of best Gender Bender titles.

Unlike other gender-bender narratives, Kokoro Connect leans towards the shoujo genre, emphasizing the emotional impact of these sudden switches.
Thanks to the body swapping, the friends are compelled to confront each other’s profound fears and hidden insecurities. As secrets unravel and tensions escalate, they navigate a torrent of emotions and awkward circumstances.
The interactions between the characters are heavily dialogue-driven, likely due to its origin as a light novel. Prepare yourself for an angsty read!
As an aside – the story is elaborated more thoroughly in the Light Novel, which consists of over 90 chapters. Thus if you’re a light novel enthusiast, I highly recommend reading the original source material!

Ranma 1/2 is frequently recognized for popularizing the gender bender genre in manga and anime. Its lighthearted and humorous approach made the concept more approachable and enjoyable for a broader audience.
What I mean to emphasize is – don’t anticipate any serious themes here. Ranma ½ is suitable for a relaxed read filled with laughter.
The plot centers on Ranma Saotome, a skilled martial artist who accidentally falls into a cursed spring during a training trip in China.
The curse causes him to turn into a girl whenever splashed with cold water, while hot water reverts him back to a boy.
Upon returning to Japan, Ranma discovers that he is engaged to Akane Tendo, a girl he hardly knows. Their relationship becomes complicated due to Ranma’s transformations, Akane’s fiery disposition, and the ongoing interference of other characters.
Both Ranma and Akane, alongside their friends and rivals, embark on a series of comedic adventures as they search for a remedy to Ranma’s curse while grappling with the chaos created by their frequent transformations.
The situational comedy may seem clichéd in this manga. However, let’s not forget that Ranma ½ served as an inspiration for many creators. This is the original!

Megumi Amatsuka is a favored and attractive girl with a secret: she was once a boy! After meddling with a curse book, Megumi’s body altered, and she’s now living her life as a girl. Nope, not a fantasy manga!
Due to her appearance, she garners a great deal of attention (think Komi-san). While adjusting to her new identity, she retains her love for fighting and possesses a tomboyish demeanor. Navigating constant attention while striving to discover a way to revert her gender is the crux of the story!
Having been released in 1999 – it follows the same old routine of using body swaps for comedic purposes. Oi dork, why is this so highly ranked, you ask! Well, the point is, I feel there are some interesting themes that extend beyond mere fun-filled tropey gender bender manga.
Similar to Ranma 1/2, it’s packed with action and contains some hilarious comedic sequences. However, the more I read, the more I sensed that the author perhaps intended this as a commentary on gender conformity.
There are numerous instances where Megumi is anticipated to behave in a specific manner, and unsurprisingly, he often dodges these expectations in style. Yet, sometimes, he becomes bewildered because of the gender swap.
Though not very overt, I genuinely appreciated these moments, and overall, the manga proved to be an excellent read. If you enjoyed Ranma 1/2, you’ll certainly love this one!

5. Kanojo Ni Naru Hi:

Kanojo Ni Naru Hi is set in a unique universe where the male to female ratio remains fixed due to a gender-shifting mechanism.
This mechanism adds a gender-bending twist to the lives of best friends Nao and Kyosuke. When he turns 17, the assertive Nao falls ill and returns transformed into a woman.
Kyosuke, who harbors a fear of women, is unsettled by this transformation, while Nao embraces his fate and strives to adjust to this newfound life.
Once more, the impact of the gender swap here is permanent. However, this story doesn’t deeply explore the psychological ramifications of such a shift. Instead, it opts to concentrate more on the romantic and sexual tensions surfacing between the protagonists.
Nao mostly reconciles with her new identity, as we witness her confidence in her new body and the alterations that follow. In fact, it is Kyosuke who grapples with the changes the most.
This gender-bender manga offers a delightful reading experience and definitely earns its place on this list! If you enjoyed this one, you should also check out Kanojo Ni Naru Hi: Another, which is set in the same world!
4. Just Like Mona Lisa:

Just Like Mona Lisa is a distinctive manga, even within the gender bender realm, as it lacks a character who undergoes a gender swap.
Instead, the plot centers on Hinase Arima, who must choose whether to be a boy or a girl before time elapses.
In a world of self-defined genders, 18-year-old Hinase remains a blank canvas. Unlike others who transitioned to their preferred genders at the age of 12, Hinase enjoys a blissful genderless existence alongside childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori.
However, their carefree days are limited. when both Ritsu and Shiori confess their feelings on the same day!
Overwhelmed by new emotions and the demand to choose a gender, Hinase embarks on a journey of self-discovery that transcends conventional roles.
Here’s why I included this title on the list. While other gender bender mangas typically involve a character’s gender/sex changing in the initial chapters, Just Like Mona Lisa intriguingly shifts the focus to the dilemma of choosing a gender.
The protagonist is compelled to select a gender to survive, raising many questions about Hinase’s identity and comfort level.
This manga is not without its shortcomings. It might leave you pondering and experiencing some frustrating moments.
However, I still believe Yoshimura has made a commendable effort in questioning gender conformity while also portraying a romance that transcends gender boundaries. The treatment of Hinase, who is non-binary, may not be entirely satisfactory, so that’s worth noting.
A special nod goes to author Yoshimura’s art in the manga too!

College life for our protagonist Isao Komori was a disaster. He clung to the aspiration of making friends, but his sole companion was loneliness, which ultimately prompted him to drop out.
As he spent his days in a stifling sense of alienation, a beautiful high school girl named Mari, who often visited the convenience store he went to, became his glimmer of hope.
One day, as he covertly observes her from afar, their eyes meet, and suddenly, Komori wakes up in Mari’s body.
Inside Mari is surely an unsettling narrative, where a distressed Komori wrestles to keep his new life intact. It unfolds with intriguing twists and developments that leave the characters in a state of madness.
If you appreciate Oshimi’s works, this is undoubtedly one of the best gender-bender manga you’ll ever come across!

2. Shishunki Bitter Change:

For some reason, I presumed that Shishunki Bitter Change would possess a humorous premise. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. This gender-bender manga tackles considerably serious themes, albeit subtly.
In some previous titles I’ve mentioned, the phenomena of body swapping weren’t permanent. Characters ultimately revert to their original forms or have at least some possibility of doing so.
However, in Shishunki Bitter Change, that is not the case.
Yuuta and Yui, elementary school classmates, unintentionally switch bodies after the former crashes into the latter. They continue living in each other’s bodies, hoping for the predicament to resolve itself.
Yet, as they navigate their daily lives, complications arise, especially as puberty strikes.
This isn’t the only manga where the effects of a gender swap are lengthy. Still, I believe that in Shishunki Bitter Change, the author effectively captures the anxieties associated with gender dysphoria.
The nuanced depiction of adolescence and the emotional realism this manga delivers makes it one of the finest gender bender titles available!
1. Ore Ga Watashi ni Naru Made:

Claiming the top position on this best gender manga list is a title that is both underrated and lesser-known. Ore Ga Watashi Ni Naru Made (Until I become me) might initially appear cliched based on its premise, but trust me, it’s far more than that.
The narrative centers on Akira, a troubled boy with a history of being abusive towards girls. He awakens one day transformed into a girl! Assuming his body will eventually revert, Akira struggles to adapt to his new reality.
Akira experiences this transformation at the age of 7. From that moment, we witness his growth, evolution and journey of self-acceptance as he comes to terms with who he truly is. As the title suggests – it represents Akira’s journey to becoming himself (herself).
This manga aligns with Shishunki Bitter Change in its exploration of the character’s gender dysphoria. However, the significant difference is that it’s executed here in a more nuanced manner.
It addresses the subject seriously, despite its lighter tone and appearance. The depiction of Akira’s struggle to cling to his male persona while adjusting to his new identity is well-crafted.
The author also critiques traditional gender roles, illustrating that one’s gender need not dictate their actions, preferences, or dislikes.
The art in the opening chapters is slightly rough, but it improves as the series continues. All in all, I’d say this is a beautifully crafted work from Hatsuki Satou that you should certainly read!
