Iconic Anime 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' Arriving on Criterion Channel

The Criterion Channel revealed today that Hideaki Anno’s groundbreaking anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion will be added to its curated streaming collection on September 1. The acclaimed series, which originally aired from 1995-1996, has secured its place in animation history for its boundary-pushing existential themes and innovative visual storytelling.

About the Series: Situated in a postapocalyptic environment where teenagers control enormous Multipurpose Humanoid Decisive Weapons — artificial beings referred to as Evangelions  — to protect humanity from enigmatic creatures known as Angels, the narrative of Neon Genesis Evangelion transitions from high-octane action to a profound introspective inquiry into identity, trauma, loneliness, and human relationships.

Criterion Channel is offering the 26-episode series in both the original Japanese and Classic English dub — the latter being accessible on streaming for the first time anywhere.

The series is supported on the platform by the feature films The End of Evangelion (directed by Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki, 1997) and Evangelion Death (True)² (Anno, 1998). These films join Criterion Channel’s other anime selections, including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Garden of Words and K-On! The Movie.
