The last monthly seasonal plant visual has been unveiled for the ongoing The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, highlighting Maomao and Jinshi encountering vibrant hydrangeas, with the former also discovering a tiny snail. Season two premiered in Japan on January 10, 2025, and will span two consecutive cours comprising 24 episodes.
The anime’s second season features several returning members from the first season. Norihiro Naganuma (first season director and series screenwriter) takes on the role of chief director and screenwriter, while Akinori Fudesaka (first season assistant director) serves as director, Ko Nakagawa (first season Episode 6, 13, and 19 storyboard artist and director, Episode 24 director) works as assistant director, Yukiko Nakatani holds the position of character designer, Misato Aida acts as color designer, Katsumi Takao takes the role of background art director, and Mayo Suzuki (The Apothecary Diaries project PV) serves as compounding director. TOHO animation STUDIO and OLM are responsible for the animation production of season two.
Music composers include Satoru Kosaki (Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-), Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss), and Alisa Okehazama (The God of High School).
The main voice cast for season two includes Aoi Yuki as Maomao, Takeo Otsuka as Jinshi, and Asami Seto as Shisui.
The anime is adapted from the light novel series authored by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino. It was first published by Shufunotomo on August 29, 2014, and has 16 physical volumes available as of May 2025. J-Novel Club offers the light novels in digital English format for North America, while Square Enix issues the series in print.
Originally, the series started as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro in October 2011. It was subsequently republished by Shufunotomo as a single volume under its Ray Books imprint.
A manga adaptation drawn by Nekokurage debuted in May 2017, and another alternate manga adaptation was introduced by Minoji Kurata in August 2017. Square Enix has licensed the first manga series for English release.
Another spinoff manga titled Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Gaiden: Xiaolan Kaisoroku launched on Square Enix’s Manga Up! service on March 23, 2025.
Crunchyroll streams both seasons of The Apothecary Diaries globally, outside of Japan. It summarizes the second season as follows:
When a favored concubine becomes pregnant, Maomao faces challenges as her food taster. She needs to remain vigilant, not just to safeguard the concubine but also against escalating threats within the palace. A new concubine with significant connections, an unresolved attempt on Jinshi’s life, and a foreign envoy making impossible demands foreshadow a grand conspiracy that could engulf the empire.
