A brand-new anime series inspired by the immensely popular Ghost in the Shell franchise is set to premiere on Prime Video on July 7. This announcement was made during Prime Video’s recent International Originals event in London.
The upcoming Ghost in the Shell series will be helmed by Mokochan, marking his directorial debut following his role as assistant director on projects like Dan Da Dan. The script is crafted by science fiction author EnJoe Toh (Self-Reference Engine, Godzilla Singular Point). Shuhei Handa (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) is responsible for character design and executive animation direction. Music direction is led by Japan Academy prize-winner Taisei Iwasaki (Belle), with animation production by Science Saru (Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, Dan Da Dan).
Based on the manga The Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune, originally serialized in Young Magazine and published by Kodansha from 1989 to 1991, this original cyberpunk military sci-fi franchise follows the journeys of a task force called Section 9, which consists of various experts dedicated to solving and curbing cyber-crimes and corruption. The franchise has given rise to numerous animated series, two animated films directed by Mamoru Oshii (1995, 2004), a live-action movie (2017), and various games over the years.

Here is the official synopsis of the upcoming animated series:
“The Year is 2029: In near-future Japan, where information has become highly intensive, with a sprawling corporate network covering the globe, electrons and light pulse through it. However, the nation state and ethnic groups continue to exist. Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, leads an elite combat unit that includes Batou. While directing her team, Kusanagi imagines the formation of a specialized task force to proactively counter emerging threats. In the meantime, Daisuke Aramaki from the ministry of internal affairs, who had been intending to establish a similar unit, recruits Kusanagi and her team. Together, they embark on their mission as Public Security Section 9 — an offensive tactical unit known as “Shell Squad.” As they tackle intricate cybercrimes and global conspiracies, the purpose of the enigmatic hacker identified as the “Puppet Master” remains a mystery. A new era of cyberpunk action is on the horizon.”
The new series will make its debut on Prime Video on July 7.
