Netflix has released its official English-subtitled trailer for The Rose of Versailles, the highly anticipated anime film based on Riyoko Ikeda’s iconic anime set during the early days of the French Revolution. The series will premiere on April 30 on the streaming platform.

This story of passion and destiny unfolds amidst the chaotic French Revolution, vividly portraying the journey of Oscar — a stunning woman raised as a male by a noble general — alongside a cast of unforgettable characters. Set in the flourishing late 18th century, they accept their fates with elegance and beauty, all while being carried along by the currents of history. In a time of limitations, Oscar breaks free from the societal constraints of class and gender, forging her own path and courageously entering the French Revolution.

Produced by Japanese studio MAPPA (Ranma 1/2 2024, Chainsaw Man), the film is helmed by Ai Yoshimura (Dance with Devils Fortuna, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) and scripted by Tomoko Konparu (Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Nana) — both of whom have previously worked together on Dance with Devils and Blue Spring Ride. The character design is crafted by Mariko Oka, with music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, Kohta Yamamoto and music producer Hiroyuki Sawano. The theme song “Versailles” is sung by Ayaka.

Toho Next and Avex Pictures are responsible for the distribution of The Rose of Versailles.
Ikeda’s original manga was released by Shueisha in 1972-73, compiled into 14 volumes. The anime series adaptation aired in 1979-80, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. The historical romance inspired various spin-off manga series, numerous stage plays, the live-action film Lady Oscar (1979), and the animated film The Rose of Versailles: I’ll Love You as Long as I Live (1987).
