It was earlier disclosed that Season 2’s staffing changes feature the involvement of Takasemaru (Violet Evergarden), Keisuke Kojima (100 Meters), and Yuri Fujinaka (Frieren Season 1 Episode 22 co-chief animation director) as character designers, succeeding Reiko Nagasawa (takt op.Destiny).

The announcement was made in September 2024, one year after the initial two-cour season premiered on September 29, 2023 JST.
The anime is based on the Shogakukan-published fantasy manga created by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, which started serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2020, boasting 14 volumes as of March 2025. Viz Media outlines the manga’s premise as follows: Decades after their triumph, one friend’s funeral forces Frieren to reflect on her own near immortality. She embarks on a quest to fulfill her comrades’ final wishes, leading her into an exciting new journey…

The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga earned the grand prize at the Manga Taisho 2021 and was acknowledged as one of the recipients of the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award.
